History of RAF Wratting Common

In 1989 a permament memorial in memory of the men and women who served at RAF Wratting Common, and especially of the 260 who lost their lives, was dedicated. It is placed at the former entrance to the airfield, at Weston Woods Farm on Common Road.

The memorial comprises a large granite stone holding an engraved slate plaque. Many people helped bring this about, and contributed their time and resources free of charge, not least the three trustees of the Wratting Common Memorial Trust - Jack Warwick, Gp. Capt. HG Davies CBE AE, and Ron Pearson. The land upon which the memorial stands was donated by the Vestey family, owners of the Thurlow Estate in which the former airfield lies. Ceremonies in memory of those who served are held here every year.
